Both

The right answer for most clients with a real funnel

“Should we be doing Google Ads or programmatic?” is one of the most common questions a client will ask — and one of the easiest to answer badly. Treated as an either/or, it sets up a false choice. Treated as a question about where the customer is in their journey, it becomes a genuinely useful strategy conversation. This is the cheat sheet to have that conversation well.

Print it, paraphrase it, or paste it into your next QBR. The goal is to give your account managers a clear, jargon-free framework they can use to guide clients to the right mix — not to crown a winner.

“Google Ads captures demand that already exists. Programmatic creates demand that doesn’t yet. Most clients need both — the only real question is the ratio.”

At its core, Google Search Ads put your client in front of people who are actively looking for what they sell. The intent is already there; you’re competing to capture it. That makes search the workhorse of lower-funnel, conversion-focused budgets.

  • The client sells something people actively search for (“emergency plumber,” “CRM software,” “running shoes”)
  • The primary KPI is direct conversions, leads, or sales
  • Budget is limited and needs to work as efficiently as possible
  • There’s measurable, existing search volume for the product or category

Its limits:

Search can only harvest demand that already exists. If nobody’s searching for the category — a new product, an unfamiliar brand, an impulse purchase — search alone has a low ceiling. It’s also increasingly expensive in competitive verticals, where a handful of bidders drive cost-per-click relentlessly upward.

Programmatic Display: Creating & Shaping Demand

Programmatic display buys ad impressions across the open web, apps, CTV, and audio using audience data and automated bidding. Instead of waiting for someone to search, you proactively reach defined audiences — by demographics, behavior, context, or retargeting — wherever they spend time online.

Programmatic wins when:

  • The goal is awareness, reach, or introducing a new product or brand
  • The client needs to build demand, not just capture it
  • Retargeting matters — staying in front of people who didn’t convert the first time
  • The audience is definable but isn’t actively searching yet
  • Scale across premium inventory (including CTV and video) is a priority

Its limits:

Lower purchase intent per impression means programmatic generally needs more volume and a longer measurement window to prove out. It also demands more technical setup and disciplined trafficking — audience configuration, frequency capping, brand-safety controls — to avoid waste.

The Real Answer: A Funnel, Not a Fight

For most clients with a genuine sales funnel, the strongest strategy uses both in concert. Programmatic builds awareness and feeds audiences into the funnel; search captures the high-intent demand that results; and retargeting (which lives in both) closes the gap. The two channels don’t compete — they compound.

A simple way to frame the ratio for a client: the earlier and less-known the brand or product, the more weight goes toward programmatic to create demand. The more established the brand and the higher the existing search volume, the more weight shifts to search to capture it. Reassess as the funnel matures.

Where Execution Makes or Breaks the Mix

Strategy is only half the equation. A perfectly reasoned media mix still fails if the programmatic audiences are misconfigured or the search conversion tracking doesn’t fire. The channels that win on paper only win in reality when the trafficking is precise across both — which is exactly where rigorous technical media buying and ad trafficking turns a sound strategy into measurable results.
